Married (1) (Sumerwell) ANN HEDDON CARPENTER 28 Sep 1867 in the Wesleyan Chapel, Ilfracombe, regd Barnstaple Sep 1867. On the marriage certificate John is a mariner, age 25; Ann, age 22, is daughter of Alfred Carpenter (deceased), joiner. In 1871 census John & Ann are at 1 Gas Road, Ilfracombe: John is aged 30 and a gas stoker. Ann born Ilfracombe 12 Feb 1842, daughter of Alfred Carpenter (18-6?-1849) and Ann (nee Heddon, 1818-). Ann (junior) is in 1851 census in Ilfracombe with mother and siblings, and in 1861 in Ilfracombe as house servant. Ann died 18 Nov 1872 in 2 Mill Head Terrace, Ilfracombe (IC); buried Ilfracombe 12 Nov 1872, age 29 (according to parish register transcript). Marriage (2) (Sumerville) to SALOME HUMPHREYS regd Totnes Dec 1876. In 1878 John is listed in Harrod's Directory, Paignton, laundry, Woodbine cottage. In 1881 census at 22 Chapel Street, Paignton, aged 39, gas manufactor; Salome, age 37, former laundress, born Paignton c.1844. John's occupation at children's baptisms given as gas stoker (John) or plumber (Thomas, Salome, Elizabeth). In 1891 census at 1 High Park Terrace, Paignton, John age 49, gas fitter, Salme (sic) age 47, laundress (employer). Death of Salome regd Totnes Mar 1894 age 49
• ELIZABETH ANN: Born Ilfracombe; birth regd Banstaple Dec 1867. At home with parents in 1871 census. Buried Ilfracombe 28 Aug 1871, age 4 (parish register) or 3 (civil register).
• JOHN: Born Ilfracombe 28 Jun 1869 (newspaper announcement #84); birth regd Barnstaple Sep 1869; baptised Paignton 30 Oct 1883. At home (Ilfracombe), age 2, in 1871 census. In 1881 census at home (Paignton), age 12, scholar. Probably married Isabella McDonald - see Group C22b
• BLANCHE: Birth regd Barnstaple Mar 1871; baptised Ilfracombe 3.7.1871. Buried Ilfracombe 21.8.1871

In 1901 census on ship (unidentified in index), member of crew, age 16, Boy 1st Class, born Paignton. Marriage to KATHLEEN MALONE regd Devonport June 1912. Together in 1921 census at 14 Wilton St, Devonport: Thomas 38yrs 8mths, Royal Navy motor boat coxswain, RN Barracks; Kathleen 38yrs, born Plymouth, cook, at home. Torney, innkeeper, 22 Church Street, Paignton. Marriage to Alfred G.E. Mitchell regd Totnes Jun 1914. Together in 1939 Register at 10 Elmbank Gardens, Paignton: Alfred born 5 Feb 1884, general labourer brickworks; Elizabeth unpaid domestic duties.
