Group C27 (USA) Summerwill

• SAMUEL: Son of Thomas and Jane; baptised Marwood 3 Apr 1811; married SARAH UPTON, Ashford 25 Dec 1838 (see Group C16). (Photo right, possibly of Samuel & Sarah; taken by W.B Ewing Photographer Picton and labelled on the back as Ben S Summerwill's grandfather. In another place it is marked Mother and Father of William James Summerwill). Samuel was a carpenter at Barnstaple; Sarah was a servant in Barnstaple, daughter of Philip Upton, labourer. Emigrated to Picton, Ontario, Canada 1845. When his son was an infant, Samuel disappeared, presumed drowned maybe off a pier or dock. Sarah married George Kelly, a stone master from Barnstaple, 12 Mar 1847, Kingston, Ontario. Lived in Guelph and London, Ontario. George and Sarah buried together in Glenwood Cemetery, Picton, Ontario, along with their son George H (1850-1893), his wife Catherine (l. MacGregor, 1859-1946) and their daughter Blanch (1889-1958) - [Information from Lora Summerwill] George Kelly was one of the builders of the Picton Shire Hall in 1874 and a mayor of Picton.

• WILLIAM JAMES UPTON (see photo right): Born 1 Jan 1846 at Kingston, Ontario. Went to Military School in Kingston. Came to Prairie City, Jasper County, Iowa and worked for two years as a bricklayer and then in a drugstore.
  Wanted to be a druggist.
  Married (1) MIRANDA - , who died 14 Jan 1874, age 19; buried Griffis Cemetery, Des Moines Township, Jasper Co., Iowa.

• Married (2) FLORENCE SLEMMONS, Prairie City, 16 Dec 1875. (Florence born 12 Jan 1852 at Cadiz, Ohio, daughter of Benjamin and Ruhama (nee Sherrod) Slemmons. In 1880 moved to Odebolt, Iowa, and William bought out the interest of W.W. Shanks in the drug firm of Shanks and Burleigh. In Spring 1883 bought out his partner and soon sold half interest to W.A. Pryor then reacquired it. Click for a photo of the drug store. From 1883 William served as School Board Director until his death. 1884 Fire Chief Odebolt. 1886-1895 Treasurer of Odebolt. 1886 Organizer of the Odebolt State Bank. William died 5 Nov 1897 at Odebolt, Iowa. Click for a photo of his grave. Florence was killed in a street car accident in Los Angeles 21 Mar 1901 and buried in Odebolt.
