• JOHN: (Sommerwill) Born Parracombe 1808-9, son of Bartholomew and Julian (nee Brailey), see Group C4. Married CHARLOTTE HARRIS at Parracombe 20 Apr 1833. Charlotte born Challacomb about 1808. Together in 1841 census at Prisonford, Parracombe, mason. Sometime between 1844 and 1851 was landlord of the Fox & Goose Inn. Listed in White’s Directory 1850 as victualler, Fox & Goose Inn, Parracombe Mill. In 1851 census still at Fox & Goose, John aged 42, innkeeper; Charlotte wife, age 43. In 1861 at Prisonford, stonemason (Fox & Goose in other hands). Morris’s Directory 1870: Parracombe, mason and bailiff to Nicholas Snow, Esq, Prisonford. In 1871 census Charlotte is alone at Prisonford; husband (mason) absent. John is a visitor, age 62, mason & glazier, at Waytown House, Barnstaple, home of John Stanburry, thatcher. In 1881 census both are together at Prisonford. Charlotte died 4 Aug 1881, age 73; buried 11 Aug 1881. Newspaper report #101. John died 2 Dec 1886, age 77; buried 6 Dec 1886. Buried together at Parracombe (gravestone).
• JOHN HARRIS: Baptised Parracombe 26 Oct 1834 (‘of New House’). At home in 1841, 1851 censuses, mason. Possibly moved to London, where death of a John Harris Sommerwill, age 66, was regd at Pancras Mar 1900. (Also a John Harris Sommerwill was married at Pancras Dec 1899). Buried with parents and brothers at Parracombe (gravestone)
• ELIZA: Baptised Parracombe 10 Jun 1837 (?); birth regd Barnstaple June 1838. At home in 1841, 1851, 1861 censuses. Married Charles Lamprey, bachelor, labourer, of Mile Hill, son of Charles Lamprey, miller, at Parracombe 13 Oct 1861; regd Barnstaple Dec 1861
• ISABELLA: Illegitimate daughter of Eliza, Prisonford; birth regd Barnstaple Dec 1857; baptised Parracombe 7 Jan 1858. In 1861 census at home with Elizabeth and grandparents, age 3. Buried Parracombe 5 May 1861, age 3. Newspaper story #34 about claim for maintenance against John Ralph, putative father.
• WILLIAM (Summerfield): Born Prisonford, Parracombe 5 Sep 1841; regd Barnstaple 7 Sep 1841. At home in 1851, 1861 censuses (stonemason). Married EMMA SMITH 22 Dec 1865 at St James', Bristol: William age 24, bachelor, mason, Cannon St; Emma age 20, spinster, Cannon St, daughter of Thomas Smith, labourer. Emma born Nailsea, Somerset, c.1847. In 1881 census at 17 Cowper Rd, Westbury-on-Trim, Glos: William (Summerfield) age 39, stone mason, Emma age 34. Same address in 1891 census. William is 'mason tiler painter': William 49, Emma 46. In 1901 census at 31 Cowper Rd, Woolcott Park, Bristol: William 59, stone mason on own account; Emma 55. William died Parracombe 11 Feb 1902, age 60 (gravestone). In 1911 Emma, widow, 65, living at 31 Cowper Rd, Redland, Bristol (6 rooms), with daughter Blanche. In 1921 census at same address with unmarried daughter Ellen Blanche:Emma 74, widow, born Nailsea, Somerset; no occupation. Death of Emma regd Bristol Dec 1925, age 78

Bessy born Bristol c.1851. Together in 1871 census at 5 Sutherland Terrace, Clifton, Bristol: Lewis 26, wall mason, born Ilfracombe (sic); Betsy age 20, dressmaker. In 1881 census at 1 Mornington Road, Clifton, Glos., Lewis age 36, mason, Bessy age 30, dressmaker. (See also Lewis, Group 4.) Lewis died Parracombe 17 Mar 1887, age 42 (gravestone).

Married (Somerwill) ANNE MARIA JEFFERY, Parracombe 29 Mar 1874 (regd Barnstaple May 1874); (Francis age 22, bachelor, mason; Ann age 22, spinster, of Parracombe). Ann born Barnstaple about 1851. Together in 1881 census in Parracombe; George age 29, mason; wife wrongly named Ada M., age 29. In 1887 George is a postman. Together in 1891 census at Prisonford; F. age 39, Rural Postman; A. age 40. In 1901 census George, postman, age 50, lodger with John Blackmore, carter, at Prisonford, Parracombe. In 1921 census alone at Rectory Cottage, Parracombe' aged 70yrs 1mth; married (sic); mason on own account. Buried Parracombe 3 Nov 1926, age 75. (Name appears both as an addition to the stone on John & Charlotte’s grave and on a slate attached to the curb of the grave of Elenor Smyth 1814-1887 and other Smyths.) Register records him as living in Lynton but a note in the margin says he was for “30 years sexton at Parracombe”. What became of Anne? There's no death record; she is no anywhere in the 1921 census; yet George says he is 'married', not 'widowed' in that census?

In 1891 census, age 16, at London House, Combe Martin, general domestic servant to George Creek, draper & grocer. Married Alfred Headon, bachelor age 22, labourer, son of William Headon, labourer, at Parracombe 3 Mar 1895 - see newspaper report #89
• FRANCIS GEORGE: Born 22 Feb 1879 (according to 1939 Register); birth regd Barnstaple Sep 1877; baptised Parracombe 23 Nov 1879. At home with parents in 1881 census, age 4. According to family tradition, ran away to sea at age 14. In 1891 census at Voley, Parracombe, single, age 22(??), farm servant to Thomas Berry. Married ELIZABETH JULIA DUNDAS (born Lough, Ireland, c.1880; daughter of William Henry and Eliza Dundas, both born in Devonport; William was a naval pensioner in the 1891 and 1901 censuses). In 1901 census at 13 Morice Square, St Paul's Devonport: Francis George (Somewill) age 24, able seaman RN; Elizabeth age 21. Listed on Roll of Honour at Parracombe. See Group C6b
