(2) Lower Woodhouse (KJS)

A typical Devon farmhouse made of cob (clay mixed with straw) and thatch. Such cottages can last for centuries provided the thatch is well maintained and the foundations are dry ("a good hat and good pair of boots").
The Summerwell farms would probably looked the same a century ago, and in the 15th century as well.

(8) The old well (now filled in) was near the house, behind the sheds. Marian's mother lived here for 80 years. Marian, who was brought up on the farm, remembers that her mother's butter was always praised, no doubt due to the coldness of the water from the well.
